Belgium had 77,107 registered motorhomes at the end of 2024: new Vanlife Index brings together official figures

The Belgian Vanlife Index 2026 brings together the number of motorhomes registered in Belgium, how this fleet has evolved since 2015, and what registration transactions and tourism figures do and do not tell us.

At the end of 2024, Belgium had 77,107 registered motorhomes. Five years earlier, there were 59,060. That represents an increase of 30.6 percent.

These figures come from the open data of FOD Mobiliteit. VanlifeBelgië.be filtered the official source files for the CAMPER vehicle category, recalculated the annual and provincial totals, and brought the results together in a public report.

Ten years of growth

The vehicle fleet grew almost every year. In 2015, 49,683 motorhomes were registered. By 2020, there were 62,348, and at the end of 2024 the total stood at 77,107.

Antwerp had the largest provincial share, with 16,951 vehicles. West Flanders and East Flanders followed with 11,509 and 11,425 respectively. In the source data, 183 vehicles could not be assigned to a province. This unknown category remains visible in the Index and was not distributed across other provinces.

Transactions are not sales

In 2025, FOD Mobiliteit also recorded 15,706 registration transactions for motor caravans. Of these, 5,378 concerned new vehicles and 10,328 concerned used vehicles.

This total should not be read as a sales figure. A registration transaction is also not the same as a unique vehicle and should not be added to the year-end fleet total of 77,107.

Campsite overnight stays are growing strongly

For 2025, Statbel reported 3,741,216 overnight stays at campsites and sites for caravans and recreational vehicles. That was 10.5 percent more than a year earlier.

Here too, the scope matters. The Statbel category includes more than just travel by motorhome or vanlife. The figure is therefore tourism context, not a count of vanlife overnight stays.

No ranking without comparable data

The Index deliberately does not publish a ranking of the "best vanlife municipality". There is currently no complete, nationally comparable official data layer for specific overnight locations, accessibility, local rules and capacity.

A simple score would therefore confuse differences in data coverage with differences in quality. The first edition focuses on series that can be verified nationally and explicitly states what they do not measure.

The full time series, provincial breakdown, methodology, source links, and downloadable CSV and JSON files are available in the Belgian Vanlife Index 2026.

Anyone reusing the figures is asked to cite both the original government source and the analysis by VanlifeBelgië.be. If a source is corrected, the page, revision date and download files are updated together.
