Until you sleep in your van for the first night.
Then you'll notice it soon enough. Wet windows. Stuffy air. A clammy feeling in your bed. A van that gets too hot as soon as the sun hits it. Or a morning where everything feels damp, even though you "didn't really do anything special."
That's usually not a sign that your van is poorly built. It's simply a sign that ventilation is more important than many people think.
And honestly: in a van, good airflow is often more important than another extra layer of insulation.
Why ventilation is so important
A van is a small enclosed space. Much smaller than a house, and usually much more quickly affected by what you do inside.
You constantly produce moisture and heat through:
- breathing
- sleeping
- cooking
- wet clothes or towels
- shoes
- a dog coming in wet
- possibly a diesel heater or other heat source
- the sun shining on the bodywork and windows
All that moisture and heat have to go somewhere.
If the air can't move, it builds up. And then you get:
- condensation on windows and metal
- a damp mattress
- musty smell
- stuffy feeling
- faster mold growth
- more heat buildup in summer
- less comfort in winter
- poorer sleep
- increased risk with combustion appliances
So ventilation isn't just "a bit of fresh air." It's a basic requirement to keep your van livable.
Good ventilation is not the same as a draft
Some people immediately associate ventilation with a cold draft that cools down their entire van. As a result, they prefer to keep everything as closed as possible.
But ventilation doesn't mean your van has to be constantly drafty as if a storm is blowing through it.
Good ventilation primarily means that air can refresh itself in a controlled manner.
You want:
- moist air out
- fresher air in
- to be able to dissipate heat
- air to move around your body, your mattress, and your interior
This can be very subtle. A small open roof vent with a little air intake below can already do a lot. So you don't have to choose between "everything sealed tight" or "full in the wind."
Why airflow is more important than many people realize
Not only ventilation itself is important, but especially airflow.
There's a big difference between:
- having a small hole somewhere
- and creating actual air movement
Airflow occurs when air enters on one side and can exit on another. This creates circulation. And it's precisely this circulation that helps to remove moisture, heat, and stale air.
That's why this usually works better:
- roof vent open and a window ajar
- fan at the top and air intake lower down
- a little open at the front, exhaust at the back
- cross-ventilation through two openings
Then you get a natural movement of air.
Without airflow, the air often just hangs around, even if there's "technically" an opening somewhere.
In a van, you literally live in your own air
That might sound a bit strange, but it's the reality.
In a house, there's much more volume. In a van, you often sleep in a few cubic meters of air. If you breathe in that for an entire night, you quickly feel the difference between fresh air and stagnant air.
Many people notice this especially in the morning:
- heavy air
- damp windows
- sluggish feeling
- sticky bed
- musty smell
That's not because there's "something wrong" with you or the van. It's because a small space quickly becomes saturated without fresh air.
Good ventilation not only makes a van drier, but also simply more pleasant to be in.
Condensation: the problem almost everyone underestimates
Condensation is probably the first visible sign of poor or insufficient ventilation.
Warm air can hold more moisture than cold air. When warm, moist air comes into contact with cold surfaces, such as windows, metal uprights, or the roof, that moisture condenses.
In a van, this happens quickly because:
- it's often cooler outside than inside
- metal cools down quickly
- glass gets cold
- you sleep in a small space
- you produce a lot of moisture per volume
Result:
- wet windows
- droplets on metal
- moisture under mattresses
- damp corners
- eventually mold or musty smell
Ventilation helps with this in two ways:
1. it removes moist air
2. it helps surfaces become less extremely wet
Insulation also helps a bit, but without ventilation, moisture continues to accumulate. That's why I often say: insulation without ventilation is half a job.
You also need to ventilate in winter
This is perhaps one of the most common beginner mistakes.
It's cold outside, so everything closes. Logical feeling. But in practice, you often make the condensation problem worse.
You still exhale moisture. Your windows and metal parts are still cold. And because everything is closed, all that moisture stays trapped inside.
You don't have to open everything wide in winter. But a little ventilation remains important.
In practice, that often means:
- roof vent on a small setting
- a window or vent slightly open
- fan on a low setting
- ventilating briefly first thing in the morning
- not piling up wet items inside
Yes, you lose some heat then. But you gain a lot of comfort because the van stays drier. And dry cold almost always feels better than damp cold.
In summer, ventilation is your best friend
In summer, ventilation becomes even more clearly important.
A van heats up quickly, especially due to:
- sun on the roof
- sun on the windows
- hot bodywork
- low air volume
- stagnant air inside
Without airflow, you quickly get an oven effect.
What helps then:
- roof vent open
- windows ajar
- fan pulling or pushing air
- seeking shade
- shielding the sunny side
- not cooking inside in the middle of the day
- parking the van so that drafts can pass through openings
Ventilation won't make your van ice cold in summer. But it often makes the difference between "still livable" and "much too hot."
A roof vent is often one of the best investments
If you had to name one element that makes a big difference in many vans, it's often a good roof vent. Especially if it also has a fan.
Why it's so useful:
- warm air rises and can escape at the top
- cooking becomes much more pleasant
- moisture from breathing can escape more easily
- in summer, hot air can be dissipated faster
- in combination with a window, you get real airflow
- it often also provides some extra light
A roof vent without a fan is already useful. With a fan, it becomes even more powerful, because you can then actively move air.
For many people, this is one of those upgrades where you think afterwards: I wish I had installed this right away.
A window ajar is not a complete system, but it is useful
Not everyone immediately has an extensive ventilation system. And that's not necessary either.
A side window or front window ajar can already help, especially in combination with a roof vent. This provides air intake below and exhaust above.
But on its own, one small window is often not a complete solution.
Why not?
- air sometimes remains stagnant locally
- rain and wind can be bothersome
- you have less control
- safety and privacy play a role
- air exchange is not always sufficient
Nevertheless, it remains a simple and useful basic. Especially for those starting small, a combination of a roof vent and a window ajar can already be very workable.
Cross-ventilation often works best
Cross-ventilation means that air enters on one side and can exit on the other. This creates a natural flow.
Examples:
- side window open + roof vent open
- an opening at the front + an exhaust at the back
- left side ajar + right side ajar
- fan at the top + air intake lower down
This usually works better than one small opening somewhere alone.
Why? Because air then gets a direction. It flows through something instead of just hanging around one crack.
In warm weather, that's wonderfully noticeable. But even in colder weather, a gentle flow helps to remove moisture.
Ventilation while sleeping
Sleeping is the moment when ventilation is much more important than you think.
You lie for hours in a small enclosed space. You exhale moisture all night. With two people, that's even more. With a dog, even more.
If you close everything then, you are almost guaranteed to get:
- wet windows
- clammy air
- a damp mattress environment
- stuffy feeling in the morning
A good sleep routine is often:
- always a little ventilation open
- preferably at the top and a second opening somewhere lower
- roof fan on a low setting if you have one
- no wet towels or clothes next to your bed
- ventilate immediately in the morning
It sometimes feels counterintuitive to sleep with an opening, but in practice, you often sleep better in fresher, drier air.
Don't forget your mattress
A large part of the ventilation problem sometimes lies not in the air above you, but beneath you.
Your mattress lies on a colder surface and receives warmth and moisture from your body from above. Without air circulation under that mattress, a lot of moisture can accumulate there.
What really helps:
- slatted base
- ventilation mat
- perforated plate
- space between mattress and wall
- occasionally propping up the mattress
- in the morning, fold back the duvet and air it out
Many people focus on windows and roof vents, but forget that ventilation around the sleeping area is at least as important.
A dry van with a wet mattress is still not a pleasant van.
Cooking without ventilation is asking for trouble
Quickly boiling pasta or making coffee seems innocent. But cooking produces a lot of moisture and heat.
Especially when you:
- boil water
- bake inside
- simmer for a long time
- keep the van closed due to rain or cold
Then you quickly get extra condensation and clammy air.
Therefore, make it a habit to:
- open the roof vent while cooking
- preferably a second opening ajar
- immediately vent steam
- not cook inside unnecessarily long if it's very hot
- ventilate briefly after cooking
You don't always have to cook outside. But cooking inside without airflow will usually make itself felt.
Odors also linger longer without ventilation
Ventilation is not just about moisture and temperature. It also helps to remove odors.
Think of:
- cooking smells
- wet dog
- damp towels
- shoes
- trash
- sweat
- smoke or fumes
- musty upholstery
In a small space, odors quickly accumulate. Even a beautiful and clean van can quickly start to smell "stuffy" because of this.
Airflow helps to solve that much faster than any air freshener or spray.
A fan changes more than you think
A fan in a roof vent or as a separate indoor fan often makes a bigger difference than people expect.
Not only because it moves air, but also because moving air feels different.
Advantages:
- it feels cooler in summer
- moisture is removed faster
- cooking becomes more pleasant
- you get dry air faster
- you can draw in or exhaust air more precisely
Even a relatively low setting often makes a difference.
In summer, air movement can do a lot purely in terms of feeling. In winter, it helps more to get rid of moist air without opening everything completely.
More ventilation is not always the same as better
Here too: smart is better than blindly a lot.
You don't want a system that:
- constantly creates a strong draft
- lets rain in
- is noisy
- feels unsafe
- takes away your privacy
- wastes unnecessarily much heat in winter
Good ventilation is usually a balance. Enough air exchange to remove moisture and heat, but not so extreme that you are constantly uncomfortable.
That's why adjustable systems often work best. You can then adapt according to:
- summer or winter
- cooking or sleeping
- one person or two
- dry or rainy weather
- warm day or cold night
What many people do wrong
There are a few typical mistakes you often see with beginners.
1. Sealing everything tight
Logical feeling, bad result. Especially at night and in winter.
2. Only focusing on insulation
As if insulation makes ventilation superfluous. It doesn't.
3. Not providing air under the mattress
Very often underestimated.
4. Only having one small opening
That doesn't always create real airflow.
5. Cooking without ventilating
Then you get extra moisture at the worst moment.
6. Leaving wet items hanging inside without a plan
Towels, raincoats, wet shoes: all moisture bombs in a small space.
7. Thinking that "I'll notice it" is enough
Sometimes you notice too late that moisture is structurally lingering.
Safety: ventilation is also a safety issue
With combustion appliances, such as gas or some heating systems, ventilation becomes even more important.
Combustion uses oxygen and can produce dangerous gases if something goes wrong or combustion is incomplete. Therefore, ventilation is not only a comfort thing, but also a safety issue.
So never just use a stove or open flame as heating in a van.
And with combustion appliances, always ensure:
- sufficient fresh air
- correct installation
- a CO detector
- a smoke detector
- good maintenance
- common sense
Even if your heating works well, air exchange remains important.
How do you know if your ventilation isn't good enough?
Often by small signs:
- windows are soaking wet every morning
- your mattress feels clammy
- it quickly smells musty
- towels barely dry
- the van stays warm for a long time in summer
- you feel stuffy or sluggish
- you often have to open everything to "get it fresh again"
- moisture spots or mold appear
That doesn't automatically mean your entire system is wrong. But it is a sign that your airflow could be better.
What helps most in practice?
If I summarize it very practically, these things usually help the most:
- a decent roof vent
- preferably a roof fan
- a window that can be ajar
- air intake below and exhaust above
- cross-ventilation
- ventilation under the mattress
- not cooking without exhaust
- consciously ventilating in the morning
- drying wet items quickly or keeping them outside
- using window covers smartly, but not making everything airtight
You don't have to immediately build a high-tech marvel. But a few thoughtful choices really make a difference.

If I were building or improving a van, ventilation would be among my basic choices. Not as an afterthought.
What I would find important myself:
- a good roof vent
- a way to safely ventilate ajar
- air around the sleeping area
- not an overly complex solution
- a system that also works in bad weather
- adjustability for summer and winter
- not just "an opening," but real airflow
For me, ventilation really falls into the category of things you feel daily. Not spectacular, but decisive.
Just like a good bed or a logical doorway, you constantly notice it, even if you don't see it in the most beautiful Instagram photos.
Why airflow is more important than you think
Because airflow affects almost everything:
- how you sleep
- how dry your van stays
- how fresh it feels inside
- how quickly heat accumulates
- how pleasant cooking is
- how your mattress holds up
- how your van smells
- how safe your systems are
- how much comfort you experience in summer and winter
A van with mediocre insulation but good ventilation often feels more pleasant than a heavily insulated van with poor airflow.
That pretty much says it all.
Good ventilation makes your van calmer
That's perhaps the most beautiful summary.
Good ventilation makes your van calmer. Less clammy. Less heavy. Less musty. Less hot. Less wet. More livable.
You don't have to make it extremely complicated. But you do need to understand that air is not a detail. It's a basic need, even in a small van.
So if you're working on your conversion or your current setup, don't just think about insulation, power, or layout. Also take an honest look at your airflow.
Because often there's much more comfort to be gained there than you might initially think.
