Winter in the van: staying warm without getting everything wet

Winter in the van sounds cozy: warm coffee, a thick sweater, rain on the roof, a blanket over your legs, and a quiet spot somewhere in the Ardennes or by the coast.

Winter in the van sounds cozy: warm coffee, a thick sweater, rain on the roof, a blanket over your legs, and a quiet spot somewhere in the Ardennes or by the coast.

But anyone who has actually slept in a van in cold and damp conditions knows that winter comfort isn't just about warmth. It's mainly about moisture.

You can get your van perfectly warm and still wake up to wet windows, clammy blankets, damp clothes, and a musty smell. Especially in Belgium, where winter is often not extremely cold, but wet, grey, and humid. That makes it tricky: you want to keep the warmth in, but you also need to keep ventilating.

So the trick is not just "heating as much as possible". The trick is to stay warm without turning your van into a condensation trap.

Why does a van get damp so quickly?

A van is small. Very small, compared to a house.

Everything you do immediately affects the air inside. Breathing, cooking, bringing in wet shoes, a dog coming in wet, drying a towel, snow or rain on your jacket, even just sleeping with two people: it all brings moisture into the air.

Warm air can hold more moisture than cold air. But as soon as that warm, moist air touches a cold surface, you get condensation. In a van, these are usually windows, metal uprights, wheel arches, cold corners, doors, and sometimes even behind cabinets or under your mattress.

That's why you often see drops on the windows in the morning. That's not just "a little steam". It's moisture that needs to go somewhere. If it can't escape, it seeps into fabrics, wood, mattresses, clothes, and insulation.

Warmth without ventilation doesn't work

Many beginners think in winter: close everything, keep the warmth in.

That feels logical, but it only works temporarily. If you close all windows, vents, and ventilation, the warmth stays better, but so does the moisture. After a night's sleep, the air quickly becomes stale and damp.

Flanders states for ventilation in homes that ventilation removes moisture and helps to prevent mold, dust mite problems, and unpleasant odors. A van is, of course, not a home, but the principle is the same: without fresh air, moisture accumulates.

So you need to keep ventilating, even when it's cold. Not by leaving everything wide open all night, but by cleverly circulating air.

A small window ajar, a roof hatch with a ventilation setting, a fan on a low setting, or ventilation grilles can do a lot. Especially if air comes in and can go out somewhere else. An opening without airflow alone does less.

Heating and ventilation must work together

A good winter setup combines three things:

1. warmth
2. ventilation
3. moisture management

If you omit one of these three, you will have problems.

Heating alone without ventilation causes condensation. Ventilating alone without heating feels cold and unpleasant. Trying to catch moisture alone without addressing the cause also has limited effect.

The best approach is usually: gentle heating, always a little ventilation, and actively managing wet items.

That sounds less exciting than installing an expensive heater, but it's what makes winter van life liveable.

Clothing: work in layers

Staying warm doesn't start with your heating, but with your body.

In winter, layering is much smarter than one extremely thick sweater. You want to be able to adapt. You get warm while hiking, you cool down in the bus, the temperature drops at night, and in the morning you don't want to shiver as soon as you crawl out of your sleeping bag.

A good base:

A hat is underestimated. You don't magically lose all your warmth through your head, but a cold head makes sleeping and sitting still much more unpleasant. Dry socks for bed also make a huge difference.

Important: don't sleep in the same clothes you've been hiking, sweating, or standing in the rain all day. They may feel dry, but often still contain moisture. Dry sleepwear is worth its weight in gold.

Your bed is your most important winter spot

If your bed is cold or clammy, the rest of your bus doesn't matter much.

A good mattress, warm sleeping bag or duvet, and insulation under your body are more important than many people think. Cold doesn't just come from above, but also from under your mattress.

If you use a thin mattress directly on wood, moisture can get trapped underneath. Especially if there is no air circulation. Your body warms the mattress, the bottom stays cold, and moisture can condense. After a while, you get a clammy mattress or even mold.

A slatted base, ventilation mat, or small air layer under the mattress helps. Lift your mattress occasionally to air it out. Especially after cold nights.

For winter use, I would rather invest in a good bed system than in extra decoration. A warm, dry sleeping place determines whether your winter trips remain enjoyable.

Condensation on the windows: normal, but don't ignore it

A little condensation on windows is almost inevitable in winter. Especially if you sleep with two people or have wet items with you.

But you have to deal with it.

Dry windows in the morning with a cloth, window squeegee, or microfiber cloth. Then let that cloth dry too, otherwise, you're just moving the problem to a wet wad in your bus.

Condensation on glass is actually the visible warning. The moisture you see is annoying but easy to remove. The moisture you don't see, behind panels or in textiles, is more dangerous in the long term.

If you see an extreme amount of condensation every morning, that's a sign that you need to ventilate more, bring in less moisture, or heat better.

Wet clothes are the enemy of winter comfort

The biggest winter mistake is just throwing wet items somewhere inside.

A wet jacket on a hook, wet shoes under the bed, a damp towel on the floor, and a dog blanket that doesn't dry: together, these quickly make your bus clammy.

Therefore, provide a fixed wet zone. Preferably close to the sliding door or back door, so that dirt and moisture don't have to go through your entire bus.

Handy in winter:

Do not store wet items in a sealed bag for a long time. That's okay for a short while, for example while driving, but after that, they need to be able to dry.

With Grephar, I would definitely provide a separate dog towel and a fixed spot for wet paws in winter. A wet dog in a small van is cozy for five minutes, after that, it's mainly moisture management.

Cooking makes your van more humid

Cooking in winter is twofold. It makes your bus warm and cozy, but it also brings moisture into the air.

Boiling water, making pasta, heating soup, washing dishes: all extra steam. If you cook with gas, moisture is also released during the combustion itself. That's why ventilation during cooking is not optional.

Cook with a window or roof hatch open, use lids on pots, and don't just let steam hang in your bus. If you can cook outside, that's better for moisture, but in Belgian winter reality, that's not always pleasant or feasible.

So make it practical: being able to cook inside in bad weather, but always with ventilation.

Gas as heating: don't do it

Using a gas fire or stove as heating may seem convenient, but it is not a safe solution.

The Anti-Poison Centre warns that carbon monoxide is produced during incomplete combustion of fuels such as gas, wood, coal, petroleum, or fuel oil. CO is dangerous because you cannot see, smell, or taste it.

A stove is made for cooking, not for heating your van. It consumes oxygen, produces moisture, and can cause dangerous gases with poor combustion.

So do not use a stove, barbecue, camping gas stove, or open flame as heating in your van. Always ensure you have a CO detector when working with combustion appliances. A smoke detector and small fire extinguisher are also wise.

Diesel heating: popular, but build it correctly

A diesel heater is the most practical solution for many winter vans. It uses diesel as fuel, blows warm air inside, and vents combustion gases outside. This gives you dry heat, without having an open flame inside.

That's precisely why diesel heating is so popular with people who travel in the colder months.

But: safe installation is crucial.

The heater must be correctly mounted, with good fuel supply, air intake, exhaust to the outside, heat-resistant components, and sufficient distance from flammable materials. Exhaust gases should never linger under or near openings where they can re-enter.

A CO detector also belongs here. Not because a correctly installed diesel heater is inherently dangerous, but because you don't want to take risks in a small sleeping area.

A diesel heater often dries the air better than gas heating, but you still need to ventilate. You still exhale moisture, and wet items remain wet if there is no air circulation.

Electric heating: usually not realistic off-grid

Electric heating sounds clean and simple. No gas, no diesel, no exhaust. But generating heat with electricity requires an enormous amount of energy.

A small electric heater of 1000 watts uses 1000 Wh in one hour. That's a large part of the capacity for many van batteries. If you run that for a few hours, your battery will quickly drain.

On shore power at a campsite, electric heating can sometimes be useful, if allowed and your connection can handle it. Off-grid, it's not realistic as primary heating for most small vans.

Electric blankets or heated cushions can sometimes be useful, as they directly warm your body and consume much less than an air heater. But even there, you need to pay attention to safety, quality, and consumption.

Insulation helps, but doesn't solve moisture

Good insulation makes winter travel much more pleasant. You lose less heat, cold surfaces become less extreme, and your heating has to work less hard.

But insulation is not magic.

If you ventilate poorly, you will still have moisture problems. Sometimes even more so, because your bus is better sealed. Warm, moist air has to go somewhere. If it can't escape, it seeks out cold spots.

So don't think: "I insulate well, so I need to ventilate less." It's more like: "I insulate well, so I can ventilate comfortably without immediately getting freezing cold."

Pay particular attention to thermal bridges: metal parts that remain directly cold. That's where you often get condensation. Completely avoiding it is difficult, but you can ensure that air continues to circulate and that moisture doesn't get trapped behind panels.

Ventilating without making everything freezing cold

You don't have to leave your van open all day.

A short, vigorous ventilation can do a lot. For example, open the sliding door or windows briefly in the morning to get rid of moist air. Then reheat. That feels more efficient than hours of a small crack without real air exchange.

During sleep, a small constant ventilation is important. Think of a roof hatch ajar, a window vent, or a fan on a low setting. You don't want to wake up in air that has been lingering all night.

A practical winter routine:

Ventilate briefly in the evening before going to sleep
Let the heating run gently or preheat
Always leave a small ventilation opening
Wipe away condensation in the morning
Ventilate briefly and vigorously
Keep wet items separate and dry them where air moves

That's not complicated, but you have to do it consistently.

Use a hygrometer

A small hygrometer costs little and provides a lot of insight. It measures the humidity in your van.

Without a meter, you rely on feeling. But feeling can be misleading. Sometimes it just feels cold, when it's actually mainly humid. And humid air feels chilly faster.

With a hygrometer, you can see when the humidity gets too high. Then you know you need to ventilate, heat, or deal with wet items.

You don't have to obsessively look at numbers, but it helps to get to know your bus. After a few nights, you'll know which habits work and which don't.

Let cabinets and storage breathe

Winter moisture likes to hide behind things.

Behind cushions, under the mattress, in cabinets, behind wall panels, under bins, and between clothes, air can hardly circulate. That's where you quickly get a musty smell or mold.

Don't always pack cabinets full. Leave some air around textiles. Use bins that you can easily remove. Lift your mattress occasionally. Don't hang wet clothes against cold walls.

A small van stays healthier if air can move. Not only in the middle of the bus, but also in corners and storage areas.

Shoes and floor: keep dirt and moisture at the entrance

In winter, a lot of moisture enters through your feet.

Mud, rain, wet grass, snow, road salt, and puddles. If you walk through your bus with wet shoes, your floor immediately becomes dirty and clammy.

Therefore, create an entrance system:

It sounds small, but this makes a huge difference. Especially if you live in a compact van where the distance between the door, kitchen, and bed is only one step.

Don't sleep with wet breath in a sealed cocoon

Many people pull their sleeping bag or blanket completely over their heads in winter. That feels warm, but you then breathe moisture into your sleeping material.

Try to keep your mouth and nose outside your sleeping bag or blanket. Rather use a hat, buff, or extra layer around your shoulders than tucking your entire head under the blanket.

A sleeping bag that absorbs moisture every night and doesn't dry during the day becomes increasingly colder and clammier.

Let your bedding air out during the day if possible. Even just opening it up with ventilation helps.

Feeling warm is more than temperature

A dry van at 14 degrees can feel more pleasant than a humid van at 18 degrees.

Humid air feels chilly. Clammy fabrics draw heat from your body. Wet windows and cold surfaces make the space unpleasant, even if your thermometer isn't extremely low.

Therefore, the goal is not always to achieve the highest temperature. The goal is dry, gentle warmth.

Sometimes it helps more to keep wet items out of your living area, ventilate briefly, and put on dry socks than to turn up the heating.

A simple winter setup that works

For a small or medium-sized Belgian van, I would rather opt for a simple, reliable setup than for excessive luxury.

A good base:

That's not spectacular, but it works.

When is winter van life not advisable?

Sometimes it's just better not to be too tough.

If you don't have safe heating, your bed gets wet, your windows freeze on the inside, you no longer have dry clothes, or your dog/children are visibly cold and uncomfortable, then it's time to find a campsite, hotel, house, or heated place.

Van life is not about suffering to prove you're tough. Comfort and safety come first.

Especially in winter, you should always have a plan B. Where can you shower? Where can you dry? Where can you charge? Where can you sleep if it gets too cold or too wet?

Staying warm is easy, staying dry is the art

Winter in the van can be beautiful. Quiet places, less crowds, fresh mornings, and that cozy feeling of being inside while it rains outside.

But the real challenge is moisture.

Heat smartly, always ventilate a little, wipe away condensation, keep wet items separate, and make sure your bed can breathe. Do not use a gas fire as heating, take CO seriously, and build your heating system safely.

If your van stays dry, winter van life suddenly feels much more feasible. Not perfect, not always as comfortable as home, but cozy, peaceful, and real.

And that's ultimately why you leave.
